Heavy Rains Flood Dubai, Shuttering Schools and Causing Damage

Unprecedented Downpours Bring City to a Standstill

Record-Breaking Rainfall Inundates Major Highways

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (April 16, 2024) - Torrential rains have wreaked havoc across Dubai, submerging major highways and forcing the closure of schools. The unprecedented downpours have inundated parts of the city, leaving residents stranded and disrupting daily life.

The rainfall, which began early on Tuesday morning, has been associated with a larger storm system that has been traversing the Arabian Peninsula. According to the Dubai Meteorological Centre, the city received over half a foot (6.26 inches) of rain in just 24 hours, which is equivalent to two years' worth of rainfall.

The heavy rains have flooded major highways, including Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, causing traffic chaos. Motorists have been advised to avoid these areas and to take alternative routes.

The flooding has also affected schools, with many forced to close for the day. The Ministry of Education announced that all schools in Dubai would be closed on Tuesday due to the severe weather conditions.

Residents in affected areas have been urged to stay indoors and avoid venturing outside unless necessary. The Dubai Municipality has deployed emergency teams to assist with the cleanup efforts.

The heavy rains are expected to continue throughout the day, with the storm system moving across the country. Residents are advised to monitor the weather forecast and take necessary precautions.
