Cicadas Expected in Massachusetts in 2024

Not Part of Widespread Brood Emergence

Trillions of periodical cicadas will emerge from the ground this spring, bringing with them their loud buzzing. While the buzzing insects will not come out in New England in 2024, a unique group of cicadas is expected to appear in Massachusetts next year. According to the Massachusetts Cicadas organization, the brood recorded in 1624 may be the only one to occur in Massachusetts. The organization offers lots of information about the upcoming cicada emergence.

Rarest Event in Decades

In 2024, two broods or groups of periodic cicadas are poised to emerge from beneath the ground simultaneously, an event rarer than Halley's Comet according to experts. The two broods, known as Brood X and Brood XIV, will emerge in 15 states from New York to Georgia. However, the brood expected to appear in Massachusetts is not part of this widespread emergence.

Conclusion

Though Massachusetts residents will not be able to witness the spectacle of the massive cicada emergence in 2024, they can still look forward to seeing a unique brood of cicadas next year. This rare event is a reminder of the amazing diversity of life on Earth and the importance of preserving the natural world.
