Grand Jury
A grand jury is a group of up to 23 people who are called together to do two things. First, they hear evidence to determine whether there is probable cause to believe that a crime has been committed. If they believe that there is probable cause, they will issue an indictment, which is a formal charge that the person committed the crime. Second, they can issue a report on their findings, which can include recommendations for changes to the law or to law enforcement practices.
Trial Jury
A Trial Jury consists of 12 jurors with alternates if selected for criminal trials and 6 jurors with alternates if selected for civil trials. The jury's job is to listen to the evidence presented in court and to decide whether the defendant is guilty or not guilty. The jury's decision must be unanimous.
On-going Cases
On-going cases may continue regardless of school closings at the judges discretion if the Court is open.
Grand Jury Term
Grand jurors serve a term of six 6 months meeting every other Thursday.
